Bill Introduced to Ban Non-Tribal Gillnets in Washington

Washington Senate Bill 5617 has been introduced to ban the use of non-tribal gillnets statewide. It already has 24 co-sponsors out of 49 total Senators. This is a HUGE victory for conservation! Essentially, the bill would ban the use of non-tribal gillnets for taking of salmon statewide beginning on January 1, 2023 and also authorizes a voluntary buyback of non-tribal gillnet permits. We must do all we can to support these lawmakers who are standing up for our fish! After decades of effort, weve never been in a better position to stop the use of this indiscriminate fishing gear.

CCA Washington Expresses Concerns Over Management Decisions Regarding Summer Chinook

CCA is concerned about the lack of a consistent approach in managing this fishery between SW Washington’s Region 5 office and the WDFW regional offices in Eastern Washington. CCA has also raised concerns about the non-selective gillnet fisheries that are being prosecuted this month, particularly the deleterious effects this fishery will have on wild summer steelhead which are presently abundant in the lower river.

The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission is set to adopt a new management policy for salmon fisheries in Grays Harbor.
